The Campaign for Democracy, CD, has strongly condemned the attack on the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN.

The organisation described the invasion of his office by a group of irate youths allegedly acting under the umbrella of the Akoko Youth Forum as a brazen and unwarranted assault on justice and democracy.

In a statement signed by its Director of Media, Comrade Oluwatobi Johnson, the CD expressed deep concern over the incident, warning that it mirrors past politically motivated attacks that have gone unchecked.

The group recalled the assassination of a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, stressing that failure to swiftly investigate and prosecute perpetrators could embolden further lawlessness.

“This reprehensible act is an assault not only on Mr. Ajulo, a distinguished human rights lawyer and activist, but also on the principles of democracy, justice, and the rule of law in Nigeria,” the statement read.

The CD also raised concerns that the attack may be part of a broader effort to destabilise the current administration in Ondo State.

The group claimed to have intelligence suggesting the involvement of desperate political figures who may be orchestrating violent tactics to create unrest.

Dr. Ajulo, a renowned legal practitioner and activist, has long been known for his unwavering commitment to human rights and the defense of the oppressed.

The CD emphasised that such a dedicated public servant should not be subjected to harassment and intimidation while carrying out his official duties.

In response to the incident, the CD has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring all culprits to justice.

“Failure to act decisively will only embolden further attacks on innocent citizens, erode public trust in governance, and undermine democracy in our nation, and we shall not hesitate to relocate temporarily, the CD Secretariat to the Ondo State capital, Akure,” Johnson added.

The Campaign for Democracy also called on civil society organizations, well-meaning Nigerians, and the international community to stand against politically motivated violence and ensure that justice is served in this case.
