BREAKING: Reps Okay Emergency Rule in Rivers

Date:

The House of Representatives has approved declaration of State of Emergency by President Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State, with some far reaching recommendations.

This coming despite the outcry, condemnation, and opposition that trailed the development from some quarters.

AljazirahNigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Tuesday, this week imposed a State of Emergency on Rivers state, South-South Nigeria.

Consequently, President Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (Rtd) as the state’s Sole Administrator to manage the affairs of the state for an initial period of six months in the interest of peace.

However, the House of Representatives presided by the Speaker, Hon Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday adopted President Tinubu’s proclamation through a voice vote with only 243 out of 360 members in attendance.

Lawmakers during plenary also recommended for immediate set up of a national committee to mitigate and restore peace and tranquility to Rivers State.

The House as parts of its recommendations also urged the National Assembly to take over the activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly within the period of emergency rule of six months.

It would be recalled that President Ahmed Tinubu while declaring the emergency rule in nationwide live broadcast on Tuesday suspended the governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state Assembly members for an initial period of six months.

But several political analysts as well as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have strongly kicked against the president’s decision.

Those who criticised President Tinubu’s emergency declaration maintained that such proclamations were subject to confirmation by the two chambers of the National Assembly.
