Borno: Military Repel Fresh Boko Haram Attack After Gun Battle

Boko Haram fighters have sacked Miringa Town in Biu Local Government Area of Borno state. The rampaging Fighters came in their large numbers at about 6:30 pm Evening when Muslims faithful were observing the Maghrib prayers.

They were shooting Rocket propelled guns RPG and gunshots.

A commercial bus driver who was also caught in the ambush, Sani Mohammed,  said “I was one of those trailing behind the military checkpoint near Government Girls Secondary school Biu when Boko Haram opened fire and soldiers responded with fire.

The soldiers were able to repel the attack by suspected members of insurgents.

A local who does not want his name in print said one soldier lost his life, while were many attacked escaped with gunshot injuries.

The officer who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to the media said the arrival of reinforcements forced the rebels to retreat.

An unconfirmed source said” we lost one soldier in the ambush by Boko Haram terrorists.

One of the residents of Miringa town said terrorists in their large number opened fire on the military checkpoint.

Another source from the residents added that the attackers actually were targeting the convoy of the wife of Chief of Army staff, Tukur Yusuf Buratai who were traveling between Miringa and Biu after the death and burial of her mother.

A source confirmed that many of the terrorists were fled with gunshot wounds by the military.

More details about the attack are being awaited as poor network services from the remote locality has hindered more comprehensive information from that end. However, Boko Haram fighters are said to be on the run as at the time of filing this report.
