Bonta/Okpute Crises: Benue Govt Orders Immediate Ceasation Of Hostilities

The people of Bonta and Okpute communities of Konshisha Local Government and Oju Local Government Areas of Benue State, have been ordered to seize prolonged hostilities in order to give peace a chance to allow Government fulfill its campaign promises of providing rural infrastructure to their Communities.

Presenting resolutions of stakeholders contained in a communique while briefing journalists Tuesday, at Government House Makurdi, after more than a 3 hour meeting which was also attended by prominent sons of Konshisha and Oju Local Government Areas, including National Assembly members, both at the Senate and House of Representatives from the state, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, said the stakeholders condemned in strong terms the renewed attacks, which has also claimed the live of a traditional ruler in the area and the destruction of property.

According to the governor, the state security council equally frowned at the blockage of parts of the road between Konshisha through Okpute, leading to Oju Local Government high way as a result of the crises and gave directives that the road be reopened with immediate effect, so as to guarantee movement and safety of lives and property.

Governor Ortom, who also told newsmen that Council equally directed the two communities to shielt their swords to usher in peace for the commencement of peaceful demarcation of the border areas, also directed regular patrol of security agencies in the crises prone areas.

He said it was also resolved by the stakeholders during the expanded security council meeting that while leaders of the two Local Government Areas ensure that perpetrators were identified and brought to justice.

Council, according to the communique, also mandated the Benue Deputy Governor Engr. Benson Abounu, and the chairmen of the affected Local Government Areas to fix a date to sensitize the warring communities on the need to allow peace to reign ahead of the scheduled demarcation exercise.
