Benue Govt To Provide Relief, Support To IDPs

From Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Benue State Emergency Management Agency, BSEMA, has restated its commitment to provide relief and support to thousands of families affected by armed conflict.

Speaking during this year’s first distribution of food and non-food items to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, held yesterday in Makurdi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, James Iorpuu lauded the commitment of Governor Hyacinth Alia towards restoring hope, dignity and livelihood to IDPs in the state.

According to Iorpuu, since assuming office, Governor Alia has demonstrated exceptional dedication to address the challenges faced by the vulnerable community, acknowledging the launch of Benue State Action Plan for Durable Solutions as part of such steps by the governor.

The permanent secretary, who said the comprehensive plan was not just about providing immediate relief, but also creating a sustainable pathway for the safe return, reintegration and empowerment of the displaced population, added that the flag-off of the IDP farm project at Tyo-Mu, targeting six local government areas heavily affected by displacement, is a giant leap in this direction.

According to him, the farm project is not only aimed at addressing food security challenges, but also equip IDPs with the means to rebuild their lives through agricultural productivity, adding that the initiative would significantly contribute to economic recovery, skills development and self-reliance among IDPs.
