Benue Govt Denies Demolition Of Mosque At GSS Otukpo

By Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Benue State Government has described as false and blatant mischief reports in a section of the media that a mosque erected at the premises of Government Secondary School Otukpo, by the Old Boys Association of the school was ordered to be demolished by the state government.

Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Ngunan Adingi, who reacted to the claims in an interview with journalists, Thursday, in Makurdi, noted that neither the Benue State Government nor its agents were mandated to carry out such demolition of any worship centre in the state.

She said government felt expedient to clarify the false insinuations maintaining that what was rather on the mind of Government was for the necessary authorities to present an approval which warranted erecting such a structure.

The commissioner who did not only condemn the false report circulating in some sections of the media while calling on members of the public to disregard the information stated that instead of demolishing the said structure, government is considering the request put before it by the Old Boys, the financials of the project to convert the structure to a lecture hall rather than demolition, insisting that government had never contemplated demolishing the erected mosque.

Also making some clarifications, Executive Secretary, Teaching Service Board (TSB), Benue State, Dr. Frank Ikyungun, told reporters that the said mosque has already been converted to a class room in line with an agreement that was reached by both the school and the community during his visit to the school on getting the information.

Ikyungun, further explained that the laws guarding the establishment of Secondary Schools in Benue were such that no religious structure was allowed to be erected in Government Secondary Schools across the state, maintaining that the reason for the ban was to ensure they were no religious crises among Students of which GSS Otukpo, should not be an exception.

The TSB boss who warned those spreading the falsehood with the intention to cause crises among Christian’s and Muslims in the state to desist forth with for peace to reign in the state, announced that the Governor has approved the deployment of the principal of the school to the Teaching Service Board headquarters Makurdi, and directed that the Vice Principal takes over with immediate effect.
