Benue Farmers Appeal To FG For Safety Crops Harvest

BY HENRY IBYA, MAKURDI

Leaders of the three socio-cultural organizations in Benue State, the Mzough U Tiv, Ominy ‘ Igede and Och’ ha kidoma and about 21 Local government chairmen serving in troubled areas suffering from attacks of herdsmen have requested the Federal Government of Nigeria to deploy special joint forces at the entry points in the state to forestall further attacks on people of the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen to guarantee safety of both farmers and to ensure the return of displaced persons.

The stakeholders who were led by the Benue ALGON chairman Mr. Caleb Aba, the Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, during a media briefing in Makurdi, expressed worry that as the dry season is already around the corner, there were fears that the influx of armed Fulani herdsmen into the state would likely heighten attacks and killings of innocent farmers who will be on their farms harvesting crops.

The leaders identified some of the entry points to include Awe, Keana and Doma Local Government Areas, all of Nasarawa State, which service as entry points into Mbakyor Tyuuluugh, from John Wata, while on the Kwande/ Cameron borders the herders enter through Moon, Yaav, Kashimbila and Tukum of Taraba were gateways into Utenge, Shitile in Katsina- ala and Tungwa, Anyibe in Logo LGA respectively.

The stakeholders comprising 21 Local Government Chairmen and leaders of the three socio-cultural organizations in Benue State explained that out of the 23 local government areas of the state, 21 have suffered one form of herders attack and the other, recalling that Governor Samuel Ortom, the chief security officer of the state narrowly escaped assassination by the Fulani Militia who later openly accepted responsibility.

The group noted with displeasure the unrepentant attitudes of the herders who are in the habit of using unjustifiable claims as the reason for their sustained attacks and killings of innocent farmers, and equally condemned the recent attack and the killing of mourners by gunmen in Logo Local Government Area of the state.
