By Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Chairman, All Progressive Congress, APC, committee panel for 2023 Governorship primaries in Benue State, Dr Peter Ojie, Friday, denied allegations emanating from public quarters that the exercise scheduled to commence yesterday was marred with irregularities and confusion.

The panel committee chairman who stated this during a press conference held at the Benue APC Secretariat in Makurdi, said though there were logistics challenges from the National Secretariat of the APC, the committee on its part arrived Benue at late hours but commenced the exercise immediately.

“We started the process yesterday, by addressing stakeholders and aspirants on the madate that was given to us by the national Secretariat.

“We also briefed stakeholders on the method of primaries, the direct primaries option A4 as one of the methods recognized lawfully by the constitution of the APC, and adopted by the national Secretariat of the party for the Benue primaries”, Ojie explained.

By this he said contestants are expected to have agents both at the state and across all the council wards in the state, stressing that legitimate card carrying members of the party to participate in the voting are expected to go to their various council ward headquarters where Party registers would be brought out for members to cross check their names and if found, vote for candidates of their choices.

He said distribution of electoral materials for the conduct of the Primaries which started yesterday continued this morning explaining that presiding officers dispatched across the state for the purpose of conducting a free and fair primaries would start turning in results before evening. On how many people will participate in the primaries he said the committee was not precise pointing out that though the number of Party men and women per council ward in the register should be the expected number of voters, it was obvious that not every member of the party will participate in the primaries thereby making it difficult for the committee to jump into conclusion the number of people expected to vote during the exercise. The committee chairman who denied receipt of any court injunction from any aspirant of the party contesting the Guber primaries at the time of filling this report assured Benue people of a smooth, transparent, free and fair primaries that would reflect the yearnings and aspirations of the people. Investigation carried out by Aljazirah Nigeria indicates that results have not yet started coming in at the time of filling this report.
