Avoid Indiscriminate Dumping Of Refuse, Osun Environmental Officers Charges Residents

The President of the Environmental Health Officers Association, EHOAN, Osun State Chapter, Sanitarian Ola Sunday Olufemi, has called on residents of the state to cultivate the habit of maintaining cleanliness and avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse to avert outbreak of epidemics.

Sanitarian Olufemi made this call while fielding questions from journalists during an inspection tour of the State Environmental Health Officers to Ede metropolis to monitor the rate of compliance of people with regards to environmental sanitation law.

The State EHOAN President, described the unhygienic attitudes of some residents of the area as worrisome saying that the entire Environmental Health Officers have intervened by clearing the nuisance at Akoda, Seventh-Day, Baptist, Oke-Gada areas of Ede where illegal dumping of refuse still persists.

“This waste dumped illegally has a lot of health hazards to humanity, as people are diagnosed of so many ailments associated with dirty environment like cholera and different kinds of infections,” he said.

Sanitarian Olufemi who informed that they are in Ede metropolis to ensure complete clean environment noted with great concern that such unhygienic habit of the people was very disturbing, pointing out that the present administration had vowed to ensure zero tolerance to filthy environment and make the State Safe for everyone.

Sanitarian Olufemi who commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for his adequate support and for giving his marching order that all Local Government Areas of the State must be hygienic said they are collaborating with the Osun State Waste Management Agency, OWMA, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that there is good, clean and conducive Environment across the State.

The Osun EHOAN President who urged residents of the State to demonstrate their unalloyed support to Governor Adeleke in making Osun a clean state, therefore adviced them to imbibe the habit of living healthy by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians, road sides and illegal places.

Sanitarian Olufemi informed that the exercise would move to another zone come next month in order to ensure complete compliance by the residents of the State on Environmental Sanitation.

While speaking, the South-West President of the EHOAN, Dr Temitope Akinwumi said that the coming out in large numbers of the Environmental Health Officers was to ensure there is adequate compliance by the residents to ensure there is clean and conducive environment.

According to him, “Governor Ademola Adeleke is a good environment friendly and we must follow his footsteps by ensuring that our people are living in good environment”.

The General Manager of the Osun State Waste Management Agency (OWMA) Sanitarian Fatai Oladosu Oyewole, in his own submission said the incumbent Governor Adeleke’s led administration in the state had done well within the short period of his assumption in office for embarking on various environmental activities with the focus on achieving the government objectives of restoration of healthy living and empowerment for the citizenry.

Sanitarian Oyewole, noted that the current administration has successfully placed a high priority on environmental sanitation and waste management, hence the support given to this agency since its came on board.

He said OWMA has succeeded in entrenching the culture of cleanliness among the citizenry, adding that with the efforts put together by the agency, there is sharp reduction in sanitation related diseases just as there is drastic reduction in mortality and morbidity rates.

Among the Environmental Health Officers during the exercise include, the State Secretary of the EHOAN, Sanitarian Akinola Raphael Olutayo, the Vice-Chairman, Directors Forum of the Association, Sanitarian Olaoye Ayobami, the Deputy President, Sanitarian Fasilat Titilayo Lawal and other Exco members among others.
