The Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN) is proud to announce a two-day program dedicated to promoting safe and sustainable mobility for youth. The event, scheduled to hold from May 30 to 31, 2025, will take place at the prestigious Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, bringing together stakeholders from across the country to focus on empowering the next generation with the tools and knowledge for safer, greener mobility.
This initiative aligns with the core vision of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), of which ATCN is a member, to consistently foster a culture of safety, responsibility, and sustainability in road use, particularly among young people. The program is designed around a comprehensive approach that combines education, infrastructure development, public policy, and community engagement to build long-term change.
Speaking ahead of the event, the President of the ATCN, Mr. Ishaku Bamaiyi, emphasized the pivotal role of education and awareness in transforming mobility culture. He noted that instilling road safety education in schools from an early age is vital to shaping responsible road users. He also highlighted the importance of youth-targeted campaigns that focus on critical behaviors such as the use of seat belts and helmets, adherence to traffic rules, and an understanding of the environmental impact of various mobility choices.
Mr. Bamaiyi further outlined the key thematic areas the program will address, including:
Youth-Friendly Infrastructure: The need for safe pedestrian pathways, bicycle lanes, and traffic-calming measures in school zones and residential areas to protect young commuters.
Encouragement of Active Transportation: Promoting walking, cycling, and other non-motorized forms of transport as healthy, environmentally conscious alternatives.
Accessible and Efficient Public Transportation: Advocating for youth-accessible, affordable, and secure public transit systems that serve their educational and social mobility needs.
Youth-Centric Policies and Participation: Engaging young people directly in mobility planning and decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard in shaping a safer future.
He also stressed that sustainable mobility is not just a matter of infrastructure but a societal commitment. “It takes the collective effort of government, civil society, educators, and communities to create an environment where young people can move safely, affordably, and sustainably,” he said.
The upcoming event promises to feature interactive workshops, expert panels, policy dialogues, and practical demonstrations, all aimed at equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to become champions of road safety and sustainability in their communities.
