Abia State Police Commissioner, Danladi Isa has disbanded the command’s Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT, unit, as well as its special squad.
In place of the disbanded units, the commissioner established the Scorpion Squad, a newly trained, tactical and professional unit.
Isa named SP Ibe Daniel as the Commander of the Scorpion Squad and will be assisted by DSP Eze Augustine.
“This decision (to disband SWAT and CSS, and set up a new squad) is part of the command’s administrative and operational measures to ensure compliance with the rule of law and promotion of a professional police force in Abia State that is equipped with the necessary skills to effectively and efficiently combat crime and criminality in alignment with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP,” the command’s Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka quoted the commissioner as saying in a statement made available to AljazirahNigeria in Umuahia.
Addressing the newly formed Scorpion Squad, Isa charged the personnel to ensure that all their operations are based on actionable intelligence, adding that they must adhere strictly to the command’s operational dress code for easy identification and accountability.
He also emphasised the importance of tact, professionalism and strict adherence to the rules of engagement and warned that “any behaviour detrimental to the image of the force will not be tolerated and will be visited with appropriate sanction.”
The commissioner charged the squad to take decisive action against violent crimes in the state, ensuring that criminal threats are swiftly eliminated and crime reduced to the barest minimum.
