Abbas Presents Parliamentary Devt Programme To Stakeholders, Donors

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, yesterday, presented the parliamentary development programme of the 10th House to the diplomatic corps, development partners, as well as donor agencies in Abuja.

In his remarks during the event that took place within the National Assembly Complex, the speaker stated the importance of the National Assembly in Nigeria’s democracy, maintaining that a vibrant democracy is dependent on a vibrant legislature.

He informed that the Parliamentary Development Programme is a deliberate initiative under the 10th House to strengthen legislative capacity, as well as  promote sustainable development across states.

According to him, “This initiative, which began after the inauguration of the 10th House, has received crucial support from the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, whose commitment has been central to its success.”

The speaker expressed appreciation to UNDP alongside other critical  partners of the 10th House for their unwavering dedication and support to move the green chamber and indeed the legislature to the next level.

He, however, emphasised the role of the National Assembly in a democratic system.

In her presentation, the Resident Representative, United Nations Development Programme in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, described the programme as “a milestone in our collective efforts to strengthen governance and promote democratic processes in Nigeria.”

According to Attafuah, “On behalf of the United Nations Development Programme and by extension, the United Nations family, I would like to commend you for your vision for the 10th House of Representatives that promotes transparency, accountability, responsiveness and dedication to the principles of democracy.

“Your commitment to modernising the legislative process to align with international best practices is exemplary. It requires that we enhance the institutional capacity of the House to be more effective in lawmaking, oversight and representation.”

The UNDP representative commended the speaker for his exemplary leadership style including the promotion and advancement of numerous bills and measures to increase the participation of women in elected and appointive offices.
