Borno State government has voiced its growing concern over the escalating misuse of social media platforms and their potential consequences for security, advocating for a legislation to regulate online content.
Speaking yesterday in Maiduguri, the Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Poverty Alleviation, Sayinna Buba noted the urgent need for regulations to effectively address insecurity and foster good governance within the state.
He highlighted the specific challenges that the Borno State government is encountering with social media, particularly TikTok, due to the rapid dissemination of fabricated and misleading information that generates unnecessary distraction for security agencies.
Buba implored social media users, especially young people, to diligently verify information before sharing it and to promptly report any harmful content that could undermine the state’s ongoing efforts to recover from over a decade of insurgency.
He emphasised the significance of digital literacy skills in enabling individuals to critically evaluate online content that poses a threat to both national security and social order.
The commissioner asserted that legislation, rather than relying solely on technological solutions, is paramount in holding digital platforms accountable for the content they host.
He called for the establishment of stronger legal frameworks and robust enforcement mechanisms to regulate social media and online activities.
“Regulating social media is very important,. It is disheartening to witness individuals commenting on issues they lack understanding of.
“While everyone has rights, these rights should not infringe upon the rights of others by disrespecting leaders and government.”
He advised social media users to conduct thorough investigations before commenting on or disseminating information, cautioning that “Discipline is very important. No nation can progress without it.”
Buba also drew attention to the state government’s dedicated efforts, noting that “Some commissioners are working tirelessly, often throughout the night, to ensure the safety of the people.”
He stressed Governor Babagana Zulum’s unwavering commitment, stating that he has spent countless nights striving to restore Borno’s past glory.
According to him, key initiatives under the governor’s directives within his ministry include facilitating the transportation of farmers to their farmlands to bolster food security and encourage agricultural activities across the state.
“Government is actively empowering youths through skills acquisition programmes and providing stipends to support their start-up businesses, following collaborative efforts with the police to curb political thuggery.
“Furthermore, over ₦2.37 billion has been allocated to empower persons with disabilities.
“A dedicated task force has been established to address the issue of street begging and poverty alleviation efforts include the distribution of food and other essential items valued at over ₦8 million to Borno indigenes.
“In addition, youth clubs are receiving direct cash support of ₦100,000 per member, benefiting a total of 116 clubs.”
