The Minister of aviation, Festus Keyamo SAN has called for the revival of the ‘Fly Nigeria Act’ as a strategic measure to boost the country’s economy.

Speaking at a Stakeholders engagement on the legal framework for the Fly bill and related enabling legislation, Keyemo argued that the ‘Fly Nigeria Act’, which was first introduced about 15 years ago, has the potential to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and promote national development.

The Minister said, the ‘Fly Nigeria Act’ is a vital piece of legislation that can help to promote the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry, saying by supporting local airlines and encouraging Nigerians to fly with them, we can create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and promote national development.

He emphasized that this will enable government to provide support for local airlines, including subsidies, investment in aviation infrastructure and so much.

The ‘Fly Nigeria Act’ was first introduced in the 1970s as a measure to promote the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry. However, the act has been largely ineffective in recent years due to a lack of enforcement and support from the government.

According to him, “Our gathering marks a pivotal moment in our collective efforts to reform and rejuvenate the Nigeria’s Aviation Sector, aligning it with global standards and ensuring it serves as a catalyst for national development.

He noted, “As you are aware, the aviation industry is a vital pillar of our economy, driving growth, facilitating trade, and fostering connections both within our borders and beyond. As we deliberate on the Fly Nigeria Act, we are setting the stage for transformative changes that will enhance our capacity, promote competitiveness, and elevate the standard of services provided to the Nigerian populace and international travelers.

“The Fly Nigeria Act is more than just a legislative proposal; it is a bold vision aimed at revitalizing our sector and seeks to foster a sense of national pride and ownership, encourage more Nigerians to choose our indigenous carriers, and ultimately, create a sustainable and thriving Aviation Industry. The Act is aimed to support infrastructure development, boost job creation, and ensure that our aviation policies are aligned with best practices and international standards.

“Our focus is to ensure that the right policies, legal framework, and administrative framework are in place to support the growth of the aviation industry. The mortality rate of local airlines in Nigeria has been alarming, and this government is determined to change that.

“We’re committed to creating an environment that allows local operators to thrive. Unlike many African countries with only one national airline, Nigeria has multiple local operators. We want to ensure they survive and have the right environment to operate”.

“Once we’ve supported our local operators, we can consider establishing a national carrier. Our local airlines are already representing us well globally, and we’re proud of them”.

He also, explained that regarding the global conspiracy to stifle indigenous airlines, it’s a fact that aero politics is a reality worldwide. Many countries are involved in this global game, seeking to feed on other countries’ air traffic. As a government, it’s our responsibility to be wise and create policies that ensure fair competition.

“We welcome foreign airlines, but we must create a level playing field for our domestic operators. We own the traffic, and we should be the ones to benefit from it, he said”

Speaking, head of civil service of the federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack who was represented by Dr Amechi Temitope said the legal framework of the proposed Flying Nigeria Act stakeholders engagement is an important initiative that signifies a milestone in fostering national unity, economic development, a sustainable and competitive aviation sector that truly represents the aspiration of our nation.

She said the proposed Flying Nigeria Act is a testament to our collective resolve to strengthen local content, bolster domestic airlines, and ensure competitiveness of Nigeria on the global stage.

She reaffirm shared commitment to a future where Nigeria aviation thrives and becomes a people of excellence.

Also, Spokesperson of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, commended the minister dedication and resilience and urged for collaboration to ensure the passage of the “Flying Nigeria Act” which aims to ease airline operations in the country.
