300 Athletes Ready For 2018 CBN Tennis Championship

No fewer than 300 athletes will be competing at the 40th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open Tennis Championship, organizers have said.

At a Press Conference at the National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday, the President of Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) Mr. Ifedayo Akindoju said 128 male athletes and 68 female athletes will take part in the main draw.

According to him, the event which will take place between 21st and 30th June will hold at the Abuja National Stadium.

On his part, the CBN’s Acting Director of Corporate Communication Mr. Isaac Okorafor said the winners in the singles category for Men and Women will be rewarded with N700,000 each.

“The runners-up in both the male and female categories will go home with N500,000 each,” he added.

Mr. Okorafor noted that the aim of the championship was to discover emerging tennis talents that could represent the country at major competitions in Africa and beyond.

“We can say confidently that this objective has been met as the championship has produced talented players that have gone on to represent the country at several local and international tournaments.

“We see the talents that have been harnessed through this competition as value for money because investing in the youth is one of the greatest pursuits any nation can embark upon.”

Finalists at the last edition; Babalola Abdulmin and Joseph Imeh are presently representing Nigeria at DAVIS CUP in Kenya.
