Gombe State Government is to spend N8.5 billion on 288,700 persons for COVID-19 Action Recovery Stimulus Go-Cares programme in the next two years.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya stated this at the flag-off ceremony of the programme in Kuri town in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area where N1.1 billion was released for its take-off.

The governor explained that out of the amount, N3.4 billion will support poor and vulnerable households with grants and basic services.

Another N3.4 billion will be used to support farmers with farm inputs in order to increase food production and enhance the performance of the food value chain.

According to him, the remaining N1.7 billion shall be disbursed as grants to MSMEs to support their operational activities and help them recover from the huge losses suffered during the pandemic.

The programme tagged Go-Cares, which is a domesticated version of Ng-Cares, is to help cushion the impact of COVID-19 on the economy and livelihood of the people.

He said “We saw global economies enter recessions, livelihoods disrupted and millions of jobs lost in an unprecedented manner with recovery just beginning.

“This makes the programme not only timely but essential. The challenges of Covid-19 and the global economic meltdown have certainly made us to be more strategic and focused in our development drive.”

He added that the intervention perfectly aligns with his government’s human capital development initiative as encapsulated in its 10-year development agenda.

He commended Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, for supporting the federal government to ensure that the programme is approved by the World Bank for implementation.
