2023: SDP New Nation Chairman Assures Of Transparent Primaries

Ahead of the preparation for the 2023 general elections, the  new national chairman of the Social Democratic Party , SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam has assured members of his party and all aspirants of a free , fair, transparent  and credible primary election.

Alhaji Gabam , a former national Secretary of the party swapped position with the former national chairman, Dr Olu Agunloye who is now the National secretary.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday at the party’s National Secretariat  Abuja , Gabam who disclosed  that the party is going to adopt the indirect mode of conducting its primary election, said it has no plan to impose consensus on the aspirants.

The party chieftain said “Consensus is not our focus , we are going for indirect primaries, we are not going to force consensus arrangement on any aspirant”.

Gabam who said his party has been repositioned to wrestle power from the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress APC said the party has been harvesting decampees from the two major political  parties in the country.

“The SDP is the party to beat in the 2023 general election, by every definition and standard there is no party that Nigerians are surging on like the SDP”.

He dismissed  insinuations  in certain quarters  that a frontline presidential aspirant under the platform of the All Progressive Congress APC may have concluded plans to decamp to the SDP if he fails to secure the APC ticket.

“These are speculation, i don’t talk on speculation, i won’t be part of rumour mongers”.

Speaking on the call by the Inter Party Advisory Council IPAC for the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to extend the time line of submission of candidates names by two months, Gabam argued  that it will help the parties to streamline and finetune the process ,adding that it will equally help INEC more in doing their job.

“The decision for extension was unanimously agreed by the 18 political parties as presented to INEC by IPAC chairman  The reason was established in that letter. Extension will do well for the INEC and the parties. Less than one month or two weeks extension will be okay , but if INEC does not extend it we are okay in SDP”.
