2023: Adhere To NBC Codes, Kaduna NUJ Chair Urges Members

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna Council, Asma’u Yawo Halilu, has urged members of the Union to strictly adhere to the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) code of conduct in the coverage of the forthcoming general elections.

Asma’u made the charge while delivering a goodwill message at the Interfaith Mediation Centre in Kaduna on Tuesday, where she further enjoined members to be guided by the broadcasting codes and all legal provisions guiding broadcasting internationally.

Highlighting the NBC codes for the 2023 elections, the Chairman of the Union asserted that journalists must provide a level playing field to all political players, registered political parties and candidates.

She added that NBC’s code has provided that: broadcasters must not deny airtime access to any group or political party, and ensure equity in airtime allocation and coverage of political parties’ activities particularly during prime times.

According to the NBC codes, she said; that making money through political adverts and campaigns must be done within the ambit of Law.

This is just as the Union leader further explained that broadcaters must handle live political rallies with care and due professionalism, in addition to studio-based live political interviews/broadcast.

Meanwhile, the NBC has also advised that any political content that is indecent and hateful; a station is allowed to turn it down and give reasons why it cannot be taken.

In addition, broadcasters must ensure that every partisan political broadcast must be recorded off transmission and preserved for 150 days after broadcast.

“That anchors in the spirit of fairness should manage their political guests well and do not allow them to malign others especially those not present on the programme,” the NBC code of conduct reads.

While speaking, Asma’u called on all political actors in Kaduna state to shun politics of bitterness, violence, thuggery and embraced issue based campaigns throughout the electioneering campaigns period in the state.

She however, advised the security agencies to carry out their duties diligently before, during and after the forthcoming elections in the interest of the state and the nation at large.

While assuring the people of Kaduna state of the Union’s readiness in the coverage of the elections, she further explained that the Union is doing it best to eradicate dangers of ethnic, political and religious motivated reportage and dissemination of information that can instigate violent conflict in the society.
