In a remarkable moment for Nigeria, 12-year-old Nigerian-American tech inventor, Eniola Shokunbi has earned widespread acclaim for her groundbreaking air filtration system—an innovation that has attracted $11.5 million in grants in Connecticut, USA.

Her invention, designed to combat air pollution and enhance respiratory health, has positioned her as a global inspiration.

During a recent visit to Nigeria, Eniola, accompanied by her mother and two sisters, was warmly received by the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande.

Dabiri-Erewa lauded Eniola’s intelligence and drive, calling her “a beacon of hope and a true ambassador of Nigerian excellence.” She stressed the importance of encouraging young innovators and creating stronger global opportunities for Nigerian talent.

Eniola expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and spoke of her dream to bring her innovation to Nigeria to help improve air quality in urban areas.

“I want to inspire other Nigerian children to dream big, solve problems, and make a difference. As Nigerian youth, we can do anything—the solutions are out there; it’s just up to us to find them,” she said.

Olawande echoed similar praise, stating:

“Eniola represents the future Nigeria must believe in. Her story is one of resilience, vision, and innovation. We must foster an environment where Nigerian youth—both at home and abroad—can flourish. The Ministry is committed to partnering with NiDCOM and other stakeholders to better connect with and support the next generation.”

Dabiri-Erewa  described Eniola as “a shining star and a testament to what is possible when young Nigerians are empowered,” encouraging others to find inspiration in her accomplishments.

This strategic visit highlights the growing recognition of the Nigerian diaspora youth as essential contributors to national development, innovation, and global engagement.

Eniola is currently in Nigeria as a special guest of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council in Abuja.
