Yobe Govt. assists IDPs who lost harvests to fire with N18m

The Yobe Government on Wednesday assisted 117 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who lost their farmlands to wild bush fire in
Gulani Local Government Area with N18 million.

Alhaji Musa Jidawa, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who distributed the assistance to the victims in Damaturu, said
this was to cushion the hardships suffered by the victims.

He said government was touched by the unfortunate incident in which IDPs who returned to their communities cultivated their farmlands but lost the harvests to bush fire.

He, however, said “it was encouraging to see these communities returning home and engaging in farming to rehabilitate their economic lives.

“But they were visited by this unfortunate calamity and that was why government
provided them with this assistance.”

According to him, the victims have been categorised for the assistance and those who lost 1-20 bags of grains have been supported with 45 per cent of their loss, while those
who lost 21-40 bags will get 35 per cent of their loss.

“Those who lost 41-60 bags have 30 per cent support, 61-80 bags were provided with 25 per cent and 81 bags and above received 20 per cent assistance of their loss.”

Jidawa explained that subsistence farmers had higher percentage of assistance because they were financially weak and deserved more assistance to resettle and rehabilitate themselves.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gabai, Kaugama and Rubbo communities who relocated lost their harvests to the wild fire.

Alhaji Ali Maina, the village Head of Gabai, commended the Yobe Government for assisting them.

He said most of the victims were subsistence farmers who cultivated their farms to feed their families and sell some to marry out their daughters but had their crops destroyed by fire.

“We want to specially thank Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam for looking into the plight of the victims and assisting them promptly,” he said.
