Police To Investigate Alleged Assult On BIRS Chairman
By Abraham Uwuasom, Makurdi
The Benue State Police Command is to set up an investigative panel to probe the alleged assault on the Executive Chairman Board of Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Mrs. Mimi Adzape-Orubibi by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olu Kayode Ayilara.
Governor Samuel Ortom stated this today at the command headquarters in Makurdi while briefing newsmen after a meeting with the Deputy  Inspector General of police, DIG, Mr. Joshak Habila, Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni as well as Senator George Akume among others.
He stated that the meeting became necessary following a misunderstanding between the BIRS Chairman and the Police, stressing that they were informed by the DIG that the Police Commissioner would constitute an investigative panel to ensure justice in the matter.
Governor Ortom said the state has faith and trust in the Nigerian Police, adding that what was important was to ensure that the rule of law prevails at the end of the day.
An eye witness account, Mr. Frank Usa-Adi told reporters that last Thursday, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of X-Squad, Mr. Olu Kayode Ayilara visited BIRS headquarters to demand the release of some tax offenders but did not meet the chairman and was asked to come back at a later date.
He stated that the Assistant Police Commissioner came back today and had met the BIRS chairman in her office during which a quarrel ensued which  later resulted to the alleged assault on the chairman.
Mr. Usa-Adi described the development as embarrassing, saying the attitude of the ACP was uncalled for and disgraceful.
