Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has applauded Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State for standing firm and resisting the pressure to repeal the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, saying it is better to suffer persecution than repeal the law.
Governor Fayose stated this at the New Banquet Hall of Benue Peoples House, Makurdi during a visit to the state to commiserate with Governor Ortom and people of Benue over the new year killings by herdsmen.
He stated that the constitution allows states through their respective Houses of Assembly to make laws for good governance and security of their domains, stressing that any attempt to dislodge Benue people from their ancestral homes would be met with stiff resistance from God.
According to him, the battle to sack farmers from their homes across Nigeria by herdsmen is worse than terrorism, noting that it was unacceptable to turn a blind eye to wanton destruction of lives and property while hate speeches are termed acts of terrorism.
While noting that the blood of the slain victims of herders attacks would rise and fight against the invasion of Benue, Fayose stated that Nigeria is the only country where cattle are reared with AK47 and other sophisticated weapons instead of sticks.
Responding, Governor Ortom said if the concerned authorities had heeded his security alert and risen to the occasion, the ongoing genocide in the state would have been averted.
The Governor urged herdsmen to move to Kano where his counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje had asked them to migrate to with their AK47 riffles and continue with open grazing.
He expressed hope that the operation Cat Race soon to be launched in the state by the military would go after the killers and ensure the return of displaced persons to their homes.
The Governor while acknowledging the support of the National Assembly to the plight of Benue people also expressed appreciation to his colleague from Ekiti for his support to the Internally Displaced Persons.
Governor Fayose who had earlier visited the graveyard where 73 victims of new year attacks by herdsmen were buried, donated ten million naira to the Benue state government to help cater for the displaced persons.
