There are clear indications that ailing President Muhammadu Buhari may return to the country any moment from now, AljazirahNigeria investigation reveals.
AljazirahNigeria reliably gathered that the president may have been certified fit by medical experts who have worked superbly and cautiously on the Daura-born, former army general to get back on his feet after many months of being indisposed.
A member of the medical team who spoke with AljazirahNigeria on condition of anonymity said the president is doing well and may return any moment from now. When asked why the medical team will not allow the president to speak with Nigerians on his recovery rate, the member said it is highly unprofessional to allow a recuperating patient to do so.
“I think Nigerians should pray for their leader instead of politicizing his health status. President Buhari is like any other Nigerian who could fall sick any time. Nigerians expect your president soonest.
Let me shock you, President Buhari is eager to come home but he has been advised to tarry a while for reasons best known to the medical team,” he added.
Analysis of President Buhari’s health challenges
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had on Tuesday visited the president at the Princess Grace Hospital, London apparently to confirm his health status and pledged his continuous loyalty to his boss.
The Acting President who briefed State House correspondents before the commencement of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Rock Villa Abuja on Wednesday has doused the tension over the ill-health of his boss. Addressing the media, Osinbajo said of the president, “He is in very high spirits, he is recuperating very quickly and we had a very long conversation. We spoke for well over an hour. His humour is all there. He is doing well. We discussed wide-ranging issues. I can’t go into specifics.”
AljazirahNigeria recalls that President Buhari has been a constant visitor to London since taking over Nigeria’s presidency in 2015 after creating one of the biggest upset in Nigerian political history defeating the then President Goodluck Jonathan in the general election of that year.
The dateline of his first visit to London showed he left the shores of the country on June 5, 2016 to treat an ear infection which raised a lot of uproar in the country. While some criticized him on the decision because it may expose the president to certain security threat and espionage, others believe he deserves the right to seek medical treatment anywhere in the world.
It is in heat of the argument that the president was flown to London to treat his infection, to begin a 10-day vacation after transmitting power to vice president Yemi Osinbajo.
“President Buhari will take 10 days off and travel to London from Monday June 6th, to rest. During the holiday, the President will see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a persistent ear infection. The President was examined by his personal physician and an Ear, Nose and Throat (E.N.T) specialist in Abuja and was treated. Both Nigerian doctors recommended further evaluation purely as a precaution,” Adesina had stated in the release.
On January 19, 2017, Mr President returned to London to continue his treatment in what was shrouded in secrecy by his media aides. There were conflicting reports on his health status as weeks after weeks he missed the FEC meeting he was supposed to preside over. While there are mounting pressures from the opposition who wanted to know the situation with the president, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, goofed and on many occasions, mismanaged the whole show.
The constant visit of the president to London has continued to raise eyebrows about his true health condition with Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State spearheading campaigns for Buhari to resign. Fayose claimed the Acting President’s visit to the Princess Grace Hospital was a trick to put the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting Nigerians.
The Ekiti strongman carpeted Osinbajo saying the president is critically lying ill and that the Acting President is hiding the true health status of his principal. He followed up by saying he would release damaging pictures about the president health condition.
President Buhari set to return
A reliable source in the Villa disclosed to AljazirahNigeria that the president is expected back in the country any time soon.
“I can tell you that the president is recovering very fast and will come back any time for now. But he needs to listen to the medical advice of his doctors to recover fully. His mind is in Nigeria, he is fully committed to the Nigerian cause and has absolute confidence in the Acting President,” the source said.
Power play in the Presidency
President Buhari’s absence has created a vacuum in the Presidency nay Nigeria and the executive arm seems to be at crossroads. There are dissidents at the corridors of power and dissent voices who believes that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is not fit and capable to lead ‘them’ in the president’s absence.
There are lots of underground scheming and unwarranted acrimony but the Acting President has been cautious, he treads with care.
AljazirahNigeria investigations reveal there is palpable fear in some quarters that if President Buhari is declared dead, power would return to a certain part of the country. Certain cabal, it has been gathered are not comfortable with Osinbajo running the country because of the belief that the Yorubas are sophisticated and can always fashion a way out of difficult situations.
In practical terms, they believe that with Osinbajo in full throttle, it is Bola Tinubu’s Presidency by proxy. Nigerians recall that it is the APC national leader who facilitated Osinbajo’s ascendancy to the office of the number two citizen during the last general elections.
As Nigerians continue to count days to the arrival of Mr President, Osinbajo’s message has brought message of hope and relief to the citizens who long to see their elected president after more than 60 days in London.
