FG to set up technology hubs across the country- Osibanjo

By Mariam Sanni, Abuja

The Acting President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osibanjo has revealed Federal government’s plan to establish innovation hubs across the country.

Osibnajo, who disclosed this during his keynote speech at the ‘2017 Smart Cities Summit Nigeria’ held in Abuja, explained that the technology hubs will be fully furnished with infrastructure and capacity building tools.

He added that hubs will be designed to produce relevant innovative technology solutions to a wide range of business, commercial and government problems.

According to the acting president, government intends to create a reservoir of human capacity in technology that can be exported internationally.

He stressed that technology on its own is not enough as technology is a tool that merely enables government to transform how services operate to serve citizens.

‘’The Federal Government plans to establish innovation hubs across the country. In partnership with several major technology companies, the technology hubs will be fully resourced with infrastructure and capacity building tools. Each hub will be designed to produce relevant innovative technology solutions to a wide range of business, commercial and government problems.

‘’This government plans to encourage innovative technologies to spearhead Smart domestic production, Smart Agriculture, Smart e-government & Health delivery, Smart Mobility, Smart Energy & Environment, Smart policing, and indeed Smart cities.

‘’As a first step, government has developed and approved a new ICT strategic road map that would make affordable broadband access as an essential part of national economic planning in pursuance of the vision 20:2020 as laid down by His Excellency, President Mohammadu Buhari, GCFR to make Nigeria a top 20 global economy by 2020’’ he noted.

He assured that the Federal Government has planned to come into the technology space and help transform the sector by providing the necessary infrastructure and enabling environment.

According to him, the Smart cities initiative for Nigeria will among others take a critical look at the preparedness, unique challenges, and emerging solutions necessary for a sustainable Smart city initiative for the country.

Further speaking, the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu said that the summit is aimed towards x-raying  the  huge business opportunities for providers of smart city technologies to exhibit and pitch their solutions and products to Federal, State and Local Government.

The Minister noted that smart cities are not built by one organization or a sector of government but by a collective of all stakeholders.

He said there is need for the Cities to develop an interconnected, integrated approach, one that brings together areas traditionally viewed as separate: energy and mobility, government and health, education, and environment.

According to him, improving on all other sector is essential to improve the fundamental economic prospects.

He added that there is also need to link infrastructure and innovation, to increase the potential to help close both infrastructure and innovation gap.
