Ekwueme: Obiano inspects facilities for hitch-free burial

By Kingsley Ezekwelu

The governor of Anambra state Chief Willie Obiano has said that the State Government will put every necessary efforts to ensure that elder statesman-late former Vice-president, Dr Alex Ekwueme was given a deserving state burial.

Gov Obiano made this known during his tour of faclities and inspection of ongoing asphalting work at Amansea border road along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway preparatory to the arrival of the remains of the late Dr Ekwueme.

During the inspection exercise, Gov Obiano visited the border area between Anambra and Enugu states, along the Enugu/Onitsha Federal highway which is a Federal road presently being asphalted by the Anambra State Government.

The governor revealed that the state government decided to undertake the project because of the personality of the deceased and the premium it attaches to his burial.

According to him, the road will create smooth access into the state for the anticipated large number of people expected at the burial this weekend.

The site engineer of the contracting firm handling the project, Mr Maher Deeb said they were working round the clock, day and night to ensure that they completed the project before the Thursday deadline.

From Amansea boundary, Gov Obiano proceeded to inspect setting up of the ground at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, for the deceased’s Commendation Ceremony.

It was observed that tents were being erected while electrification and beautification works were also ongoing.

Speaking after the inspection exercise, the Governor said the facilities were wholly being put in place by the State government to accommodate over 25,000 persons expected to attend the ceremony.

Describing the late former Vice President as an asset to the State and the nation, Gov Obiano said no amount spent to give him a befitting burial will be enough to repay his contributions towards the growth and development of the state and the country.
