Com’Wealth Games: 915 Athletes Storm Abuja As National Open Trials Kicks Off

Nothing less than 915 Athletes  comprises of male and female are currently
engaged in a battle of superiority over who makes the team  at 2018 XXI
Commonwealth Games Trials for the for the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast,
in Australia.

in  main bowl of Abuja National Stadium venue of 2018 XXI Commonwealth
Games Trials which kicks off on Wednesday.

The  three days competition will see top athletes from around the country,
competing inside the Main Bowl of Abuja National Stadium for the Games
holding  from April 4th to 15th, 2018.

Athletes are currently competing in the following events; 100meter,
200meter,4X400 meter,  Javelin, long jump,  Discus amongst other.

As explained by the  Athletic Federation of Nigeria AFN organisers of the
event, reveal that,  the ongoing trial is the part of federation’s effort
to prepare athlete for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Giving more insight into the event the yesterday in Abuja,  AFN Technical
Director, Mr Sunday Adeleye expressed satisfaction over the conduct of
athelets as he promised that the best athletes will be  pick without fear
or favour.

According to him, so far so good, we have been seen result. unlike before,
we now see couple of athletes making 46 seconds, we hope to see a 44
seconds here because these athletes are encouraged and boosted.

“IAAF sets their standard,AFN set their own above that of IAAF and about
six athletes have made the standard. Commonwealth Games is not a jamboree.

“It is always good for our athletes to do periodical  check their current
form and performance. If 100 athletes make the standard.

“so be it, it will be a  fight  between the athletes and standard. The
standard will be the decider between the athletes and the events.

“We started the camp since December last year. Most of the athletes are
more impressed with what they we have in place now. We have the photo
finish camera and back ups, we have the timer and all other things.” he
said.

Speaking also, Olympics gold medalists, Chief Mary Onyali, said final
selection will be based on the qualifications standard  in A and B category
standard.

She said: “The ideal for Commonwealth selection trial Games is for us to go
to Commonwealth Games and do very well.

“This is not final selection, but the trial will help them tremendously.

“We all know that,  coach and athletes need this kind of competition to
test themselves to adjust their mistake and improve  on their games. ” she
said.
