Buhari’s Minister’s Aides, Directors at battle over intervention funds

Abubakar Sodiq

Fresh crisis seems to be looming between Special Advisers (SAs) to one of the ministers and directors in the ministry over the intervention funds from donor agencies to assist the ongoing projects in the ministry.

Investigations by AljazirahNigeria revealed that the development has now set the permanent secretary, the minister’s aides and the directors at loggerhead with each monitoring others’ footsteps and subsequently petitioned the relevant authorities over the intervention funds.

The minister, whose state has been besieged severally by Fulani herdsmen in the North-Central Zone, had so far appointed twelve special advisers, the highest number of aides of a minister in the history of Nigeria a development the directors believe will be a clog to the wheel of progress in the ministry.

A top government source who wants to remain anonymous informed our correspondent that the appointment of the minister’s special advisers has started crippling the ministry economically while the directors were said to be redundant.

“The special assistants have partially taken over the official duties of the directors as they are now on donor agencies’ payroll and are even the ones in charge of funds coming from those donor agencies”, another dependable government source added.

Our correspondent further gathered that in order not to make it known to the general public, the permanent secretary recently summoned an emergency meeting of heads of various departments in which two of the directors were said to have boycotted.

At the meeting, according to a top government source, the permanent secretary issued stern warning to all the directors to channel any complaint through him to the minister, a situation which was said to have complicated issues.

“Their (directors) grievances are tenable because why will a minister have 12 special advisers? He has special advisers on photographer and on Facebook! What is the meaning of that? These directors are supposed to be in charge of ongoing projects but the SAs have taken over their official duties making them useless and redundant!

“The directors’ argument was that if the minister wants them to be receiving their salaries through those donor agencies, no problem but taking over their jobs completely is not good and I must confess, there is a serious crisis in our ministry which may consume some officials if the ailing President Muhammadu Buhari returns because he (the president) will definitely see the petition(s). He would be well notified of this ugly trend”, another top government source declared.
