The Nigerian Biking Community has said strict regulations on superbike riding is not the only solution to curb super bike accidents, but proper licensing procedures for riders from accredited institutions. The body has also wished the president’s son, Yusuf Buhari, who was critically injured during a bike racing accident in Abuja, a speedy recovery.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Syreeta Akinyede, pointed out that there is a positive side to motorcycling. According to him, there are reckless motorists while most motorbike accidents are met with less sympathy than car accidents, with a larger percent of the blame heaped on the rider even before a proper analysis or a valid eyewitness account is presented.
“The bikers community has observed that most Nigerians see the fears and inherent risks involved in superbike riding rather than the positives. On our part, actions would be taken to set up proper licensing procedures like what obtains for motorists, where superbike riders are required to undergo riding training from accredited riding schools and be properly evaluated before being licensed to ride, along with a set of rules and regulations, such as wearing the right gear.”
The group noted that the development of motorcycling in Nigeria has also brought about employment and business opportunities, such as the establishment of motorbike workshops, riding training schools and sales of motorcycle spare parts and gears.
