A gubernatorial aspirant in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jimi Lawal, has knocked a recent move by the Ogun State Government to stop the payment of WAEC fees for final year secondary school students in the state.
According to Lawal, the move was not only wrong, it will draw back educational development of Ogun State, noting “education which is the bedrock of every sector, should not only be made free from primary through secondary school, but be compulsory”.
He, however, said that if given the mandate in 2019, he would ensure that basic education is free from primary to secondary level in the state.
Lawal spoke, on Monday, at the investiture of the new President of Olive Circle held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Lawal, who is a senior adviser to Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, noted further that “it saddens me that the legacy of our father, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is fading – the legacy that preaches that basic education should be free for all.
“Education is the bedrock of every sector. Therefore, basic education should be free and compulsory for all in Ogun state and that is what we’ll ensure if given the opportunity to serve the good people of Ogun State”.
