Algeria coach Leekens: why we lost to Super Eagles in Uyo

Algeria coach George Leekens says his team’s failure to make their good spell count against the Super Eagles on match-day 2 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers cost them the game.

The Eagles claimed their second straight win in the qualifiers with a 3-1 win against Algeria in Uyo in 2016.

A brace from Victor Moses and a goal by skipper John Obi, sealed the win for the Super Eagles.

Speaking ahead of the 2017 AFCON where Algeria are drawn with Tunisia, Zimbabwe and Senegal in Group B, Leekens tells FIFA.com that his team would have won if they had not gone two goals behind.

“African teams usually start games at full throttle, but without testing their opponents,” Leekens explains.

“Then, as the minutes go by, the intensity drops, which is when you have to step things up and make the difference.

“Against Nigeria, for example, we played well in the second half, but only after we’d let in two goals in the first. If we’d played at the same level for the whole match, we’d have won.”

And on Algeria’s chances at this year’s AFCON, Leekens says his target is to make Led Fennecs champions.

“We want to win this tournament and take part in the Confederations Cup, but all I’m thinking about right now is negotiating our first match well against Zimbabwe and then the second against Tunisia. As far as I’m concerned, these are our two biggest games at the start of this year.”
