2019: Wike desperately lobbies PDP leaders for Vice Presidential slot

By Yemi Esho, Abuja

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (NEW), is leaving no stone unturned to realize his vice presidential ambition in 2019, AljazirahNigeria learnt.

Wike has come a long way in politics and has made contacts not only in his home state of Rivers, but in Nigeria as a whole. For those who have been following his political sojourn, Wike has been on the political turf since 1999.

At one time or the other, Wike had bèen a local government chairman of Obio-Akpor local government area in Rivers, one of the largest in Nigeria. He also served as the Secretary to the State Government  (SSG) under his estranged boss, former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, now the serving Minister of Transportation. He was appointed Minister of State of Education by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011and later became acting Minister of Education. He subsequently left Jonathan’s government to contest the 2015 Rivers State governorship election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and won against Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

AljazirahNigeria investigations revealed that former President Jonathan played a very crucial role in Wike’s emergence as governor despite stiff opposition from the APC led by Amaechi. Through the former first lady, Patience Jonathan, the PDP made strong statement that the South -South state is a no go area for the APC.

With the financial war chest at Wike’s disposal, he is like a moving train that can crush his enemies at will. He is practically the sole financier of the PDP and the leadership of the party do not joke with him. It is not a coincidence that the two mini conventions of the party were taken to Port Harcourt. Wike provided all the logistics and wherewithal to ensure that delegates had comfortable stay at the garden city.

Former president Jonathan has never failed to shower praises on Governor Wike everytime he visits Rivers. Speaking during the Rivers Golden Jubilee Anniversary Lecture in May, the former President said Wike has lived up to expectations.,

“Having had the opportunity to serve at the State level for eight years, I can attest to the fact that Wike is working. Everyday I watch television, I see programmes going on. Commissioning of projects are taking place. It takes somebody with commitment, foresight, and somebody with a strong team to achieve all these.

“Let me specifically thank the Governor of Rivers State, somebody who worked with me (as a minister), somebody I believe in. That is why I conferred on him the prestigious title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).”

Since the PDP has zoned the presidency to the North in 2019, Wike is oiling his political machine while preparing to meet some powerful PDP northern leaders to lobby for the vice presidential slot, AljazirahNigeria gathered.

Fortunately, he has the listening ear of the caretaker committee of the party, Senator Ahmad Makarfi who can sell Wike’s candidature to the northerners.

It would be recalled that Wike has a strong affinity with Sokoto State especially with the Sultan, His Eminence, Sa’ad Abubakar. Wike has visited the monarch in Sokoto and had invited the revered traditional and religious leader to Port Harcourt.

AljazirahNigeria gathered that Governor Ayo Fayose is set to sell governor Wike’s vice presidential ambition in the South West, and will need to do the ‘needful’ across board to achieve his vice presidential ambition as we count days and months to 2019.
